The Lunch Program is Embarking on a Journey of Flavors

by | Aug 10, 2021 | Latest News

I’m always eager to go back to school. Getting to see all my old friends move up to new classrooms, meeting new friends around campus, and seeing the food I’ve spent the summer planning finally going out to feed our community gives me a peace and satisfaction that I don’t find anywhere else.

There are going to be a few changes in the lunches coming from the Harwood Cafe this year. While many of the delicious favorites will remain, this year I’m going to begin introducing new flavors, new cultures, and new ingredients to our menu. It will be slow at first. New twists on old favorites and simple dishes from around the world will lead to more adventurous eating and, hopefully, an increased appreciation of the world and our place in it.

Our children have proven to be exceptionally adaptable and excited to try new food – though I think we can all agree that the Brussels sprout incident of 2018 should just be forgotten! I have no doubt that their Guides and their friends will make this process easy and fun. The French believe that you shouldn’t talk down to your children with food, and Montessori teaches us that children are capable of complex appreciation and understanding, and I look forward to doing my part to help in that journey.

See you soon!
Mr. Michael

ORDERING HOT LUNCH:
While we can’t offer a total respite from the stresses of the day, Escuela del Sol is able and willing to offer you a bit of relief from packing snacks and lunches. This is, perhaps, one silver lining to the pandemic: it’s easier and safer for food to come from our own commercially licensed kitchen than to have food brought in from home. An added bonus: the children seem to eat better when everyone is served the same food.

SNACK: Escuela will provide wholesome snacks to every student every day. Some of the snacks provided include: bananas, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, cheese, mini muffins (baked in our kitchen), mini egg burritos, mixed veggies, a variety of fruits (apples, watermelon, etc.)

Price:    $0 … this will be included in your tuition

LUNCH: Our awesome chef is working on menus that will keep old favorites as well as bringing in some new and exciting dishes. The lunch program will have an emphasis on fresh, sustainable food as well as locally grown produce.

Price:   $270/ semester if the commitment is made in advance (that’s about $3/day)
$88 / month if a monthly commitment is made in advance (that’s about $4/day).
$5 / day if you’d like to choose daily.

ALLERGIES / SPECIAL DIETS: The Café is dedicated to accommodating almost all dietary restrictions. If you have questions, please email Mr. Michael at michael@edelsol.org.
