Spring Trek: Getting Started

Junior El Spring Trek Will Be Wednesday, May 10 – Friday, May 12

Junior Elementary Trek: Getting StartedOutdoor education has always been an integral part of Escuela’s program. Students can safely stretch beyond their comfort zones, build self-reliance and resilience, strengthen community, and practice teamwork. Adventures, community bonds, and shared experiences from Treks stay with children long after they head off to high school. Alumni frequently share Trek memories as some of the most poignant and enjoyable.Escuela del Sol has enjoyed years of partnership with Cottonwood Gulch, developing a unique complement to our program that grows in sophistication and challenge along with our students. You can explore Basecamp virtually on the Cottonwood Gulch website.

Last spring we were delighted to return to Basecamp for the first time since 2019! In May the Junior Elementary communities will head to Basecamp for three days and two nights of learning, adventure, fun, and growth. Complete the Trek Info form today!

DATES
Junior El students depart from Escuela on Wednesday, May 10, returning on Friday, May 12.

Junior Elementary Trek: Getting StartedSLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS
Students will sleep in the cabins and older students may have the option to sleep in tents. Smaller cabins can accommodate six children on bunk beds and an adult on a cot inside the cabin. We may also be able to stay in the Gulch’s brand-new cabins, which are a bit larger. We will share details as they solidify.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation will be provided by The Gulch and will include vans and SUVs, driven by Gulch staff with the proper licenses and insurance. Families will be asked to provide booster seats for children who need to use them, and we have a few extra on hand.

COST
As we have been unsure about if and how treks might take place, the cost for these excursions has not been included in tuition as was once the case. It is our sincere hope that every student will be able to participate in this exciting adventure and meaningful community experience. We are therefore offering a flexible cost structure. The actual cost of this Trek is listed below; families will be asked to contribute what makes the most sense for them: a subsidized rate, the actual fee, or a contribution that includes a donation to support other families.

Junior Elementary Trek: Getting StartedJr. El Spring Trek, three days and two nights: $288 ($296 if paying via PayPal)

Your Elementary Team met with the Gulch’s Director of Education last week to discuss, plan and prepare for the Spring Trek. Much of our planning depends on numbers. Please complete the Trek Info form by Wednesday, April 12. Trek fees, however, can be paid at any time before the end of the school year. If you have any questions, or if your child is unable to join their community for this excursion, please email Elementary Level Director Sarah Louderbough.

Click here to view the schedule from last year’s Junior El Spring Trek. You can view the packing list here. Hard copies will be shared as well. If you are in need of gear or if you have extra to loan, please email Sarah and we’ll coordinate gear swapping.

Junior Elementary Trek: Getting StartedIn the coming weeks, we’ll send updates, information, and also a Trek Packet. Please keep an eye out for important permission and medical forms. Any medications that need to be administered will be managed by Escuela staff. The Gulch will accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies.

We are incredibly grateful and ridiculously excited to have the privilege of taking your children to Basecamp. These culminating experiences create memories that last a lifetime! Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time should questions arise.
